"Good" fat for a healthy heart

U.S. researchers consider that the consumption of "good" fats can reduce the risk of heart problems by 20%. Experts of Harvard Medical School, analyzing data from 8 previous studies found that polyunsaturated fatty acids, found mainly in fish and vegetable oils, protect the health of the heart. According to scientists, the restriction of saturated fats, which are found in butter and meat, is an important parameter of a healthy diet. Adults, also under official dietary guidelines, should not exceed 11% of the daily intake of saturated fats because they raise levels of "bad" cholesterol, known as LDL, which is responsible for clogging arteries and causing heart attacks. The meta-analysis of U.S. researchers has shown that any increase in consumption of polyunsaturated fat of 10% recorded a 20% reduction in onset of cardiovascular disease. The researchers point out, however, that there is a risk that follows: the recommendation to reduce saturated fats might lead to their replacement by the so-called trans fats, which burden the cardiovascular system even more. Trans fats are found in abundance in bakery goods (biscuits, cakes), fast food and ready prepared food. |
