The Secret of a Successful Diet
By Tony Papas
It seems, you should probably blame your genes for not losing weight and not your eating wrongdoing! As found by U.S. researchers, some women are genetically programmed to lose pounds more easily when they follow a specific slimming diet than another. They found why some people easily lose pounds with the high-fat Atkins diet, while others do better with diets rich in carbohydrates. Researchers from Stanford University in the U.S. did this discovery after they took smears from the buccal cavity of 100 overweight women who followed different diets over time. Therefore studied the DNA of every woman for 5 genes related to how the body uses fats and carbohydrates. The team found that women who followed a slimming diet that suited their genotype lost 3 times more weight than others. Also these women saw their waist to be reduced by 6.6 cm on average compared with others that have lost an average of 3.05 cm. The difference in weight loss between those who follow diets that matched their genes and others is extremely important, and its being recorded in the international literature for the first time. The results of this interesting research where announced in the annual conference of the American Heart Association. Experts claim that the use of genetic information may help to tackle obesity, a problem that receives a large scale in modern civilization. |

Thank you for sharing the information on this research project,Tony. Did the research reveal any change in the ability to keep the weight off? Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick

Thanks Frederick. As far as i know the way to keep the weight off is by following the diet. If by ability you are referring to DNA alterations I don't think that is possible yet. Our metabolism can change through diet giving us the ability to gain or lose weight easier.
I have certaintly seen your scenario in action. A diet that worked well for me did very little for my sister and a diet my neighbor was able to lose on left me hungry with a very small amount of weight loss to show for it. Science has figured out what the mundane world already knew: that which works well for one person is not always what works for another.

Indeed Karla!
Some people blame their genes. Others blame their jeans... Thanks for the info. Regards, Jim

As always we all need to blame something! :)
